Outdoor Environment

This space is one that I hope will be able to create a space for learning, imagination, exploration and risky play. I also hope to teach my students about pollinators through teaching about plants native to the land of British Columbia.

My hope is that my outdoor space is where children can both learn and explore therefore, I hope to have a space for an outdoor classroom where I can invite people from the community. I hope to be able to invite an elder to come in weekly or monthly to help with the planting of a garden with pollinator plants and vegetables. I hope this space can be used for story telling, lessons, and sharing circles.

Most importantly the outdoor space needs to be one where children can explore, play, create and discover. My belief is that the outdoor space is just as important as the indoor one. Most of early childhood learning comes from play and exploration. This is why it is important to me not to have man made plastic and metal structures but have wooden, imaginative spaces.

My biggest wish for the outdoor space is to create and plant a garden with my students. As an ally to the indigenous people of British Columbia I would like to help the indigenous people reclaim their land by planting species that are native to the land and to help pollinators thrive and return to their original home. By planting a garden with my students I hope to teach them the importance of healthy eating, gardening, and about where their food comes from. Ecosystems and life cycles can also be taught from this activity.
